The Merman
egg tempera & oil on stretched canvas (linen)
75 x 57 cm
2009

Finally I finished a picture yesterday. A merman, of course. Can´t seem to get rid of them. This one was inspired by a poem of Lord Alfred Tennyson I´ve found some time ago. But as a matter of course the merman mixed with another ... uh ... individual I´ve once dreamed of. My dreams are kind of strange sometimes and my pictures generate some kind of independent existence.
I swear every time I walk by he´s grinning smugly at me, like he knows something I don´t. That´s devastating ...

He is so magnificent, and very charming!
And it is an interesting collection of symbols: the rose, the crown, the thron and the heart.
I get the idea of a story where the merman plays with the heart of Dornröschen while she sleeps in her rose-covered tower, and Mr. Spock is the only one who can bring the heart back because he never ever could be enchanted by mermen.
;-)

*lol* What a story! Love it already. XD
But maybe she dreams of the merman and Mr. Spock doesn´t understand the concept ... or he´s enchanted by the merman, too. Who knows *ggg*

Now I have a lot to think about, hehe.

:-P

Mr. Spock does certainly not understand the concept. I´m absolutely sure of that, ;-) - and its also certain, that the girl is dreaming of the merman, after all he is the one, who is keeping her heart.*
The question is, is Mr. Spock really immun against the magic of a merman?

*)By the way - how did he come up into the tower to steel it? Or did he steel it before she fell asleep, maybe the story of the prickles, roses and spindles, was only a red herring. Everybody said to Dornröschen "beware of prickles" but no one said "beware of merman"
:-D

*snorts* Exactly. He would say: Fascinating! But what is he doing in there anyway? You know, I painted and thought about nothing. I for myself had a concept about the throne (not like Spock, who doesn´t understand that other concept *ggg*). On the top should be a red sun (Why? I don´t know either – rather a concept without a concept.) – and then all changed. Out of nowhere came Mr. Spock and demanded to be on the top. It was very important. What he brings in is the feeling of being alien. But I was surprised I have to admit.

So maybe Dornröschen felt alien, too? The plan to marry some boring, pimply prince in near future was nothing she appreciated.
And here comes the masterplan of the merman XD All that talk about spindles were in reality the thorns of another mean species known as Rosa canina. Rosa caninas roots are deep to find every drop of water – it´s an otherwordly plant, so I guess both met each other some time ago.
And think about Frau Holle. Jump down into a well and you´re high above in the clouds to let the snowflakes fall. I thinks, it´s similar to how to get a human heart in a tower even you´re living … uh … right deep down. *snickers*
It´s a nice example for good cooperation.

The question is, is Mr. Spock really immun against the magic of a merman?

No, I don´t think so.

So maybe that`s, what those three have in common:
They all are kind of alien , - in there own personal way.

"Dörnröschen, a merman and Mr. Spock come into a bar..."

I have no idea, how this joke could go on. ;-)

By the way do you know the part of "Columbo" called "A stitch in crime"?
There Leonard Nimoy (alias Mr. Spock) is acting as brilliant heart surgeon (who of course is not only emotionally as cool as Mr. Spock but also the psychopathic murderer ;-) ).

This, the heart, was the connection between Spock and the merman, that just came up into my mind.
...
This painting is sooo interesting!

*laughs* I´m no good in telling jokes. So I don´t know the punch line.

Ohohoooo, I know that episode of Columbo. That was quite cool. A rather disturbing image of our well known Mr. Spock, now without pointy ears ...
So the story is getting more and more interesting *ggg* I didn´t remember the ... heart.

You see, the longer you look at the picture, the more it reveals. Even it´s confusing sometimes XD

I meant "pointed ears", not pointy ... tssss

A story about these three is running up and down in my mind.
Maybe I get it done to fix it on paper, it is indeed a bit confusing yet...
This merman is dangarous... :-)

That would be nice of you. Right now I have a befuddled brain, so I can´t seem to get a straight thougt anymore. :-O But it´s an interesting story and it would be sad if it get lost.

Yeah, he´s dangerous, I never doubted this. Mermen are known for their unpredictable behaviour. But the charme!
XD
